In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant advancements across multiple industries… and web design is no exception. The question arises: Is AI going to replace human designers?

In this article, I’ll explain my take on the future of web design in relation to the AI craze of 2023!

Aren’t You Worried About Your Job?

In a single word… no. I have been a web designer & developer since the wee days of the internet, dating back to 1995. I have seen many technological advancements that were introduced and marketed to threaten my existence as a professional website designer.

  • The introduction of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors like Dreamweaver
  • The development of Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, etc.
  • The emergence of drag-and-drop website builders like Elementor, Divi, etc
  • The introduction of pre-designed templates and themes you could purchase from sites like Template Monster and Theme Forest
  • The development of website generators and static site generators like Next.js and VuePress
  • The simple implementation of server-side scripting languages, JavaScript libraries, and CSS frameworks
  • The creation of turnkey DIY business website solutions like Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, etc
  • and now… the implementation of AI from places like ChatGPT.

While each of these tools has been created to allow the average person to build a website on their own, essentially crushing my future presence in this industry… each has done absolutely nothing to impact my business in a negative way.

Don’t Fear These Tools… Embrace Them!

Believe it or not, most of the tools described above have actually helped my business grow over the years, allowing me to develop amazing websites, in much less time. And since time is money, I am able to pass these time savings onto my clients in the form of more affordable business websites. And since I can build more websites in less time, this allows me to take on more clients at a time, thus helping my business grow.

The way I see it, it’s is simply another tool in my arsenal that makes my job easier and allows me to make my services more affordable for local small business owners. I enjoy many benefits of AI in my design flow:

  • Design Efficiency: it helps me to automate some repetitive tasks; such as resizing images and optimizing code. This frees up time to focus more on creativity, accessibility, and testing.
  • Improved User Experience: I have several AI tools that analyze user behavior, and preferences, then provide feedback so I can personalize a user’s website experience.
  • Designing for Accessibility: Accessibility in web design is a major hot button right now… and AI can help address accessibility challenges by automatically generating captioning for multimedia content, optimizing color contrast, and improving keyboard navigation. This ensures that websites are inclusive and accessible to all users.
  • Creating Content: Ask any website designer about their biggest challenges in launching a build and they will often mention “content collection from clients” as one of the major bottlenecks in the design process. However, with the help of AI, I am able to create content for my clients and generate relevant material that not only benefits their website’s SEO but also ignites their creative inspiration. In fact, after presenting website content to clients, most only need to make minor adjustments to the content generated that I provide them to reach the finished product.

AI Can’t Do It All

However, despite the recent advancements in AI, there are certain aspects of web design that still require human expertise:

  • Creativity and intuition: As a human myself, I possess a unique ability to think creatively, understand complex client requirements, and incorporate emotional and cultural aspects into my website builds. AI struggles to replicate a human’s level of intuition and creativity, and since my clients lack the talent or knowledge I possess as a web designer, my agency will continue to be in the web design business for the foreseeable future.
  • Contextual Understanding: I can interpret the broader context of a website’s purpose, target audience, and business goals. I make judgment calls based on decades of experience and subjective factors that present a challenge for AI algorithms to comprehend accurately.
  • Ethical Considerations: During a build, design decisions often involve ethical considerations; such as data privacy, accessibility, inclusivity, and the moral impact on people within a society. Every day I use my human brain to ensure responsible design practices in each of my builds, which may be difficult for AI to achieve without help from us humans (for now).

Wrapping Up

While AI has the potential to revolutionize web design by enhancing efficiency, improving user experience, and providing inspiration… human designers aren’t quite ready to be put to pasture yet. We will continue to play a vital role in bringing unique creativity, contextual understanding, and ethical considerations to the design process. The future of web design lies in the collaboration between human designers and AI tools like ChatGPT, leveraging the strengths of both to create innovative and user-centric websites. This is why I don’t fear this exciting new technology in the slightest… at least not in the field of web design.
